In a well bred DDB, the most popular description of the temperament is "balanced". The Dogue de Bordeaux is extremely affectionate, as well as, a devoted family dog. The Dogue de Bordeaux is sweet and even tempered, very adaptable with a high stimulus threshold. It is important to socialize your Dogue de Bordeaux early on as they can become reserved with strangers if not properly trained. This breed is known for playfulness. This breed is like a big teddy bear with it's family. Grooming
The Dogue de Bordeaux requires minimal grooming. The folds of the wrinkles on the head should be cleaned and dried when bathing. The toenails need regular trimming (every other week) due to the fact they grow quickly and the quick may grow down the nail and make it difficult to trim them back to the proper length. If this occurs more frequent small trimmings will be needed to drive back the quick. Regular trimming is also needed to prevent developmental problems in the legs and feet. Ears must be cleaned regularly to help prevent yeast build-up or ear mites. Training
The Dogue de Bordeaux can also be stubborn and arrogant. Puppies require basic obedience training. Socialization should begin early and continue for the life of the dog. Get your Bordeaux use to being touched; touch his feet, ears, tail. Take your Bordeaux for car rides get him use to the motion and prevent car sickness. Never allow play-biting with humans and don’t play games with your Dogue that can encourage biting because of DDB's strength. Be consistent when training. It is important to establish the leadership position with your Bordeaux and keep it. Your puppy will be a full grown dog before you know it. Older Dogues can enjoy and benefit from obedience training. Because of the Dogue de Bordeauxs high intelligence level, once he learns a something, he never forgets it.
Dr. Carl Semenic said in the book, Fighting Dogs of the World, "Raise them to be gentle and they will be gentle. Raise them to be vicious, and they will be vicious......Problems lie not in the breed, but in the people." Be aware, the Dogue de Bordeaux is sensitive to anesthesia and can die from a regular dose of the common anesthesia drug.Make sure you make your veterinarian aware of this. | |
